Watch Gary DeMar discuss The Reduction of Christianity
In this more than 400-page response to the cultural surrender theology of Dave Hunt (and Dispensationalism in general), Gary DeMar and Peter Leithart present an excellent overview of what true biblical Christianity looks like.
Dave Hunt separates the preaching of the gospel from the concerns of society. He separates heavenly citizenship from earthly citizenship. In short, he has reinterpreted the Great Commission of Jesus Christ to His followers: "All power is given unto me in heaven but none in earth." Christ's earthly power can only be manifested when He returns physically to set up a top-down bureaucratic kingdom in which Christians will be responsible for following the direct orders of Christ, issued to meet specific historical circumstances.
Hunt is unusually consistent about his earthly pessimism, even to the point of denying that Jesus' reign on earth will be a manifestation of the kingdom of God. He spells out in no uncertain terms just what his radical brand of dispensationalism necessarily implies.
In short, Hunt argues that the plan of God points only to the defeat of His Church in history, that Satan got the upper hand in Eden.
DeMar and Leithart strongly disagree and present the biblical case against Hunt's pessimism and defeatism in clear exegetical terms.
